Welcome to Westwinds Clubhouse
Westwinds Clubhouse is a clubhouse model of rehabilitation, providing services to adults 18 and older having a major mental illness. Westwinds offers a broad spectrum of services including vocational, social, case management, advocacy, housing and educational opportunities. Members choose and pursue their own personal goals.
To be a clubhouse means that we adhere to 36 standards that were developed by the International Center of Clubhouse Development (ICCD). These standards guarantee that Westwinds Clubhouse offers a quality program to its membership. Westwinds periodically goes through a certification process by I.C.C.D., and is currently certified. Clubhouse programs exist worldwide and we are proud to be part of this community.
History of Westwinds Clubhouse
Originally, Westwinds was a social club for women, established by the Mental Health Association in January 1972. The Club was known as the "Merry Makers", and by 1973, the membership had doubled from twenty to fifty people. In 1974, the "Merry Makers" made their home at the Christ Church in Fitchburg and at that time opened their doors to men.
The following year, members decided to change their name to "Westwinds" to honor their director, Eloise West. During the year, 1982, Westwinds began to transition from a social club to a Clubhouse model of Rehabilitation, which supports members' recovery from a serious mental illness by offering employment, education, friendship and community.
Currently Westwinds is certified by the International Center for Clubhouse Development and is a member of the Massachusetts Clubhouse Coalition.
